Beautiful Prom & Wedding Hairstyles for Short/Medium Hair

Wedding season is just around the corner and whether you’ve decided to go the DIY route for your wedding hairstyle or are looking for wedding hair inspiration, you've come to the right place.

The first thing to decide when determining your wedding hair look is will you be doing your hair yourself? If so, consider your hairstyling expertise and choose a hairstyle that plays to those strengths. Are you a master at curling your hair? Perfected the art of the updo? Have an uncanny ability to create a messy bun that's just messy enough without looking like it's falling apart? All these skills can be used to create your own beautiful, elegant wedding hairstyle.

Next, practice, practice, practice. During the months leading up to the big day, create your chosen hairstyle each week, learning how your hair sits, which products work best for your hair, which hairstyling tools you will need, and perfecting any styling techniques. Be sure to wear the hairstyle around while out and about to see how the style wears throughout the day. You may also wish to have a close friend practice the style with you in case the wedding jitters get ahold of you the day of.

So, let's get into the hairstyles themselves. While most wedding hairstyles call for long, flowing locks, short bobs haircuts, lobs (long bobs), and medium length hair are only getting more and more popular. We’ve teamed up with our beautiful friend Elanna Pecherle to show you three easy short wedding hairstyles for your special day, if you love your shorter length and would like to showcase it on your big day.

Watch Elanna’s easy tutorial below or keep scrolling down for our step-by-step guide on achieving all three of these easy and beautiful wedding hair looks:

Old Hollywood Glamour Waves

Old Hollywood glamour waves are usually shown on longer hair, however, there's something about these face-framing curls on shorter hair that takes elevates the elegance to a whole new level. This Old Hollywood wedding hairstyle features smooth curls that will go perfectly with a vintage-inspired wedding gown complete with lace and beading.

Step 1

The key to this hairstyle is smooth, high shine curls, so start by spraying a heat protectant spray all over your hair, which will lock in moisture and boost softness and shine.

Step 2

Part your hair to the side, then split your hair in half into two separate sections. Secure the thicker of the sections out of the way using a hair clip.

Step 3

Starting with the thinner section, take a 1 1/2 inch curling wand and wrap a one-inch section of hair away from your face, starting at the mid-shaft. Keep the wand pointing downwards and hold until the hair is warm. Slide the wand out to let go. Avoid starting the curl too close to the roots of your hair.

Step 4

Repeat this process until all the hair from this section is curled. Lightly spritz this side of your head with hairspray once complete.

Step 5

Unclip the thicker section of hair. Start at the back side of this section and curl the hair in one-inch sections away from your face.

Step 6

Once you have reached the hair that is closest to your ear, reverse the direction you curl your hair to towards your face instead. This reversal in curl direction is what gives Old Hollywood hairstyles their signature vintage look.

Step 7

For the very front last section of your hair, wrap this piece more tightly around the barrel towards your face to achieve the perfect glamorous wave in the front. Once this side is completed, lightly spritz with hairspray.

Step 8

Let your curls cool down, then, using a paddle brush, lightly comb through your curls to turn them into softer waves. Spritz a little more hairspray to smooth down any fly-aways.

2. Messy Swirl Bun

Remember those messy bun skills we mentioned earlier? This short wedding hairstyle will put them to good use. An elevated, modern take on the well-loved messy bun, this wedding hairstyle is perfect for a bohemian inspired wedding gown or rustic wedding.

Step 1

Curl your hair using the same method from the first hairstyle, then spritz a texturizing spray all around your head to add extra volume.

Step 2

Using a teaser brush, gently backcomb the top sections of your hair at the roots to add more height and texture to your hair. Once all lifted, use hairspray to set the volume.

Step 3

Using a bobby pin, section off the top of your hair (from eyebrow to eyebrow for width) and pin into a small ‘poof.’

Step 4

Now gather all your hair at the back into a ponytail and start loosely twisting it as if you were to twist it into a bun. Leave the ends of your hair out and pin the twist in place with bobby pins for that undone, messy look.

Step 5

Once the twist is secure, play with the curls from the ends of your hair that were left out of the swirl to loosen them up.

Elegant Low-Do

This low bun hairstyle is the perfect combination of elegant and undone, and can be created easily with short or medium length hair. Customize this hairstyle with a beautiful jeweled headband accessory or bridal hair comb. It's the perfect short wedding hairstyle to go with a classic, understated wedding gown. Best of all? This hairstyle requires zero heat to achieve.

Step 1

Part your hair just off center and leave a few wispy pieces in the front to frame your face.

Step 2

Lightly backcomb the top of your hair at the roots with a teaser brush at the back of your head to add lift. Using a ribbon or jeweled headband, position the hair accessory around your head, leaving a few whispy pieces in the front to frame your face.

Step 3

Take a section of hair right behind the headband at the right side of your head and lightly twist it away from your face. Pin it in place with a bobby pin. Take another piece of hair just below that twist, backcomb it slightly for volume, and twist it away from your face. Again, pin this twisted piece with a bobby pin. Repeat this step once more with another section of hair so that all the hair from the right side of your head is twisted and pinned to the back.

Step 4

Do the exact same thing to the left side of your head, twisting three separate sections of hair away from your face and pinning each to the back in place.

Step 5

Lightly pull the top of your hair upwards to maintain volume and make sure you're happy with the placement of the pinned twists. Then, take all of your loose hair at the back and loosely twist upwards. Before pinning, pull the twist away slightly for a more effortless and undone look. Pin the twists to the lower back of your head with pins.

Step 6

Finish off the hairstyle with some hairspray to set everything in place.
