The social and racial unrest across America has awakened action in people around the world. As many share their support online and offline plenty of work still needs to be done. Part of this action is supporting black-owned businesses, learning about the brands and their founders and understanding what makes their brands unique. As allies of the Black community, we're committed to this movement, and pledge to support and shine a light on these issues as best we can, and one of the easiest and more impactful ways to advocate for marginalized communities is through our wallets. Read on to learn about our favourite Black-owned hair brands and show your support.

1. Briogeo Hair Care

Briogeo Hair Care is a green hair care line that is focused on products that “detoxify, hydrate, and protect.” Founded by Nancy Twine, Nancy used home-made recipes from her grandmother and mixed it with modern chemistry to create a line of hair care products that treat everything from frizz to scalp revival. What we love about Briogeo is how they list the exact percentage of naturally derived ingredients right on their bottle and their 2 to 4 step hair regimen take the guess work out of shopping for your hair care needs.

2. Mielle Organics

Mielle Organics burst onto the hair and beauty scene in 2014. Since then they’ve racked up a collection of best-selling products including Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioning Protein/Moisture Replenisher, Moisturizing Avocado Hair Milk, and the White Peony Leave-In Conditioner. Mielle’s products use organic ingredients and their names not only sum up what’s inside, but also sound good enough to eat—Pomegranate & Honey Curl Smoothie, Honey & Ginger Edge Gel – just to name a few. Mielle Organics was founded by Monique Rodriguez, a registered nurse who drew on her health background to create a line of hair products and vitamins that also include skin treatments.

3. Adwoa Beauty

Made for multi-cultural hair types, this gender-neutral beauty brand keeps things “simple, transparent and kinky.” Delivering products with natural ingredients and effective results that eliminates the need to trial and error countless different products. Adwoa is the traditional name of the company’s founder, Julian Addo. Julian became a hairstylist in her teens and went on to pursue banking, business, and her own hair and beauty brands, thus, Adwoa Beauty was born. Adwoa Beauty’s newest baomint collection is all about a healthy scalp for healthy hair growth and is made for all kinds of kinky and curly hair.

4. Naturalicious

CEO and founder of Naturalicious, Gwen Jimmere started making products in her kitchen. Using ingredients and formulas that worked for her, cutting her wash and style time from hours into minutes. Gwen created two 3-step systems specifically for an easier wash and style routine for loose or tight textures. Naturalicious aims to help women to not only save time and money on their care with only the essentials, but to ensure they know their hair and themselves are the standard of beauty.

5. The Wrap Life

Perfect as your everyday accessory, The Wrap Life created by Nnenna Stella makes gorgeous Head Wraps, Bandies and Turbanettes in rich, colorful fabrics. Their website and their social media offer amazing tips and tutorials on how to tie and style their products, making all the styles super accessible no matter what your style is.

6. Pattern Beauty

Founded by actress, Tracee Ellis Ross, Pattern Beauty launched just last year with a full line of hair care and styling products. With products made specifically for curly hair, the brand helps women and men find their curl patter and what they need to best care for their curl type and texture.

7. Glow by Daye

It’s all about protection and conditioning for Glow by Daye. The brand, founded by Ranay Daye, offers a line of bonnets with adjustable drawstrings to fit your size and style, along with scarves, deep conditioning heat caps and shower caps. Glow by Daye’s line of products helps maintain and promote healthy hair day and night.

8. Girl + Hair Under Hair Care

Founded by dermatologist, Dr. Camille Verovic, Girl+Hair sells products made specifically to treat natural hair under protective styles. Protective styles, such as hair extensions, wigs, braids or weaves do just as the name suggests – protect natural hair from breakage and damage. Dr. Verovic, who wears protective styles regularly wanted products to strengthen and protect her natural hair in a convenient and efficient way while wearing these styles, which is how the brand was born. Girl+Hair includes products that cleanse, condition and refresh the natural hair with nozzles that make treatment easy and accessible.

9. Melanin Haircare

Melanin Haircare can barely keep their Multi-Use Softening Leave-In Conditioner in stock, that’s how good it is. Melanin Haircare was founded by two sisters and natural hair influencers, Whitney and Taffeta White. Their focus is on natural and nutrient-rich products, and along with the leave-in conditioner, their signature collection also includes the Twist-Elongating Style Cream and Multi-Use Pure Oil Blend. The brand also has satin headwraps.

10. Ooli Beauty

Made for locs, Ooli Beauty has a line of lightweight, natural hair products to cleanse and condition locs. Founded by Jessica Pritchett, this line of hair products which contain ingredients like aloe vera, shea and mango butters can also be used if you don’t have locs.

11. Oyin Handmade

Made with food-grade ingredients, oyin is the Yoruba word for honey, a staple ingredient in many of the brand’s products. Oyin Handmade not only makes nourishing hair products, but natural skin and body treatments such as deodorants and body butter. Founded by Jamyla Bennu, Oyin or honey is central not only to the brand’s ingredients list but its culture, wanting to promote the principles of sweetness, joy and love to their customers’ self-care routines.

12. Alikay Naturals

Alikay Naturals does more than just hair. They have a full line of skincare products, candles, and even a baby line. Founded by Rochelle Alikay Graham-Campbell, also known as BlackOnyx77 – her popular and growing YouTube Channel – when she was just 22 years old, Rochelle was already whipping up homemade products in her home to help treat her tightly coiled hair. Rochelle created and coined the LOC Method™, a hair care routine to protect and maintain healthy hair care. Akilay Naturals has everything you need to treat, condition and style natural hair and carry their natural ingredient commitment to all their other products too.

13. Design Essentials

Bringing salon-quality products to your home, Design Essentials is known for its Haird ID method. A questionnaire that helps people determine the right products they need for their hair type and concerns. Cornell McBride launched Design Essentials in 1990 with the vision of not only offering quality products that deliver salon results, but to build a brand that also educated consumers on the hair care they need for a healthy hair care system, without all the fluff. 

14. Mixed Chicks 

For years, friends and “mixed chicks”, Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge blended different products to help manage their hair that didn’t seem to fit into one category or another. They created a line of products for themselves and eventually turned it into a global business that embraces all hair types of different multicultural backgrounds. The Mixed Chicks Leave-in Conditioner is one of their hottest products.

15. Eden Bodyworks

After suffering a chemical burn at 11 years-old, Jasmine Lawrence was constantly on the look out for products to treat her damaged hair. Eden was born in 2004 with the purpose of not just saving and treating damage hair, but preventing it also, using natural ingredients. Eden also has a line of natural skin products. The Coconut Shea collection, for example, available for both hair and skin gives a boost of moisture to over processed hair or dry skin.  

16. Kinky Curly

Kinky Curly’s Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner/Detangler is a fan favorite. Shelley Davis, founder of Kinky Curly took inspiration from family’s homemade natural products. To create the products seen on shelves today, Shelley took an online cosmetics chemistry course and with her experience with homemade products created Kinky Curly in 2003.

18. Kinky Tresses

19. BGLH Marketplace

Leila Noelliste started the Black Girl with Long Hair website, that offered readers tips on natural hair and beauty. Leila started whip up her own mango and cocoa butter after discovering their natural benefits for hair and skin. She eventually started making customer butters for her website followers then launched BLGH Marketplace in 2014. The marketplace has now grown, but Leila still makes the butters by hand. According to her website, Leila whips more than one metric ton of shea, mango and cocoa butter a year with the help of two assistants and has served 20,000 customers worldwide. 

20. Jane Carter Solution

Hairstylist Jane Carter suffered a serious allergic reaction to her beauty products – particularly the synthetic scents, which inspired her to create her own line of hair products. Jane Carter Solutions products only contain ingredients obtained from plants, essential oils, and sea botanicals so that those who are sensitive or have allergies can have products that work and won’t impact their health. Apparently, even Beyonce is a fan of the Jane Carter Wrap & Roll mousse!

21. Bask & Bloom Essentials

After experiencing postpartum shedding and hair loss, Bask & Bloom Essentials' founder, Candera Thompson created a line of products to treat shedding, breakage and dryness. Upon experimenting with products at home and exchanging recipes with other women who’ve suffered postpartum hair loss, Candera found a common ingredient, ayurvedic herb that appeared in the most successful creations. From this, the brand started with just two products More Moisture Cream and Stimulating Herbal Oil and now boasts a line with 12 products from shampoo and conditioners to treatment oils.

22. Miss Jessie’s

Sisters Miko and Titi Branch named their brand after their grandmother, Jessie Mae Branch who would create all sorts of mixtures and formulas at home to style and tame her granddaughters’ hair. Miko and Titi took these creations and put their own twists, testing their solutions on each other. Miss Jessie’s is not only has a full line of popular hair products used by celebrities such as Alicia Keys and Jill Scott, but also their own salon and curl bar in Florida.

23. Ecoslay

Launched in 2015, each product in Ecoslay’s line is still created inside Adria Marshall’s kitchen. With products named after delicious foods (Orange Marmalade Curl Definer, Peppermint Schnapps Hair Wash, Banana Cream Deep Conditioner just to name a few) the products contain all natural ingredients.

24. Brush with the Best

Hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood created her namesake Detangler Brush after finding that most detanglers break or pull on kick, curly hair textures. The flexibility of the brush and bristles allow the brush to move seamlessly through curly, wavy and kinky hair preventing hair loss, breakage and scalp damage.

25. Grace Eleyae, Inc.

Grace Eleyae Inc. creates a line of hair accessories from scrunchies to turbans and caps made to protect your hair while not giving up on style. She created the Original Slap (Satin-Lined Cap)® because she wanted a hat that would protect her hair. After seeing success with her own hair health, she started making more Slaps for family and friends and eventually took her product to Etsy. After high profile reviews Grace Eleyae has expanded into an array of products and accessories made to protect your hair.
