Summer is in full speed! What can be better than warm sunny days, floral dresses and icy cold lemonades? That sounds like perfection if you ask me…Summer, however, can bring a few challenges to our hair. Summer heat can damage our locks, give us very oily scalps, and even turn our hair green when in contact with chlorine (yes, this can actually happen). But, fear not! We are here to your rescue and want to share 6 amazing and simple summer hair tips!
1. Reduce Heat
If you are going to spend a long day in the sun, we recommend either applying a deep conditioner containing SPF protection or covering your scalp with a hat. Another way of protecting your hair is to avoid heat styling as much as possible (we know this can be challenging, but your hair will be screaming "ahh, thank you!"). Plus, we have tons of heatless hairstyle ideas on our YouTube Channel. My personal favorites are these perfect heatless curls and these mermaid waves (that will make you look like a true mermaid this summer).
2. Limit Chlorine Damage
Ever heard of that green hair swimmers get after too much exposure to chlorine? Well, sadly it actually exists. The key to avoiding the greenish color and chlorine damage is to prep your hair before taking a swim. Since dry hair acts like a sponge, you can rinse your hair with tap water before your swim in order to ensure it will absorb significantly less chlorine. After the swim, rinsing the hair with some apple cider vinegar and water will limit further chlorine damage. So you can kiss green summer hair goodbye!
3. Keratin Treatments
We see it too often…colored hair that gets ruined and damaged from all the salt water and sun exposure. This is because heat and sun oxidize our hair color, leaving our beautiful hair dry. Kertain Treatments can help revitalize and rehydrate our hair, bringing it back to life. There are tons of natural hair products and we've found a great Organic Keratin Conditioner, which you can find here.
4. Wash Less
Have you ever heard the recommendation to wash your hair everyday during the summer because it helps control oily scalps? Oh, really? Actually, frequent washing strips your scalp from its natural oils, stimulating an additional production of oil. The solution to this is to wash your hair less. On break days, make sure to rinse your hair with cold water since it closes the cuticle and seals its moisture. A great DIY treatment to control oil secretion in your scalp, is to mix 2-3 tbsp of coconut water with the juice of one lemon. Apply the mixture to your scalp and massage it for 5 minutes before rinsing it with cold water. For best results, do this as a weekly treatment.
5. Fight Frizz
Do you ever feel like your hair grows in size the second you step outside on a humid day? Frizzy hair is definitely a challenge, especially in the summer months. But don’t worry, we’ve got a few creative solutions that will help you save the day! Create an easy taming spray mixing argan oil and water. This helps moisturize your hair while taming it against the humidity. Running late and don’t have that much time? Hairspray your brush and run it through your hair, which will lock your frizzy and rebellious locks in place. In addition, avoid brushing your hair with regular brushes, and consider switching to a double-set wide teeth comb as the former causes natural curls to frizz.
6. Drink More Water
We will never hear it enough: drink more water! Not only is it indispensable for your body and mind, but it also does wonders to your hair! Remember that water will always hydrate your hair and scalp. In addition to drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, make sure that you are eating delicious healthy foods that are boosting hair growth. We made this blog post about five foods for healthy hair, make sure you add them to your diet.
