This year's Met Gala was one for the books, with celebrities and their respective hair and makeup artists coming out in full force. The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is an annual themed fundraising gala to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. This year's theme, 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination' (approved by The Vatican!), had celebs doing their best, fabulous interpretations of celestial beings, religious icons, and Catholic motifs through makeup and fashion.
From Kim Kardashian's hairstylist Chris Appleton creating an extreme half-up hairstyle on her using Luxy Hair extensions, to Kylie Jenner's hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons creating a low messy bun also using Luxy Hair extensions, to Bella Hadid's dark vampire Priestess look, to Amanda Seyfried's golden crown and soft waves, we just couldn't get enough of these high-fashion looks! Today, our friend Kassinka will show you how to recreate our top 3 hairstyles from this year's Met Gala, all with only 3 steps.
1. Kim Kardashian: sleek high ponytail
We have to start off with the queen herself, Kim Kardashian. Not only is Luxy Hair proud to be a part of Kim's Met Gala look, but we think her hairstylist Christ Appleton knocked this look right out of the park...or right out of the Metropolitan Museum! Using 220g Mocha Brown Luxy Hair extensions, Chris created dramatic volume and length in Kim's naturally shoulder length hair, to achieve this 90's inspired supermodel glam ponytail. Here's how to create this look:
Step 1: straighten your hair and Luxy Hair extensions
The key to this look is that really sleek, straight hair, so start by straightening your own hair, as well as your Luxy Hair extensions. Click here for some extra tips for how to get super straight, shiny, smooth hair.
Step 2: section off your hair and clip your Luxies in
Create a section at the crown of your head, and flip this section upside down toward the front of your face. Now, take a 2-clip weft and clip it in upside down on the flipped over section. Then, take another 2-clip weft and clip it normally on the other section. These wefts will create that added length and volume in your ponytail for a dramatic effect like Kim's Met Gala hairstyle. If you want even more length and thickness, you can clip another weft and stack it on top of each of these wefts.
Step 3: gather all your hair into a high ponytail at the crown of your head and secure with an elastic
And that's it! Easy as 1-2-3.
2. Amanda Seyfried: tight curls with tiara
We just love Amanda Seyfried's Met Gala look not only because it is super easy to recreate at home, but because it was a feminine, soft take on this year's theme. Instead of taking the literal route with an elaborate headdress or bedazzled crosses all over her dress, Amanda opted for a regal, gold gown complete with beautiful, tight curls and a dainty tiara. Here's how to create this look:
Step 1: Part your hair down the middle, and curl your hair
Create a center part to start off, then, using about a 1 inch curling wand, curl all your hair. The key to Amanda's curls is that they are all facing the same way, giving the hair that royal, regal look. When curling your hair, be sure to curl all the strands the same way to achieve this. For the pieces around your face, wrap the hair around the wand at your temples and curl the hair facing away from your face. Click here to learn more techniques to curl your hair.
Step 2: Let your curls cool, then tousle them
Once you have curled your whole head, leave the hair alone to cool. At this point, you may want to curl your Luxy Hair extensions to add some wefts in for added drama and volume. Once the curls have cooled, tousle them and gently break them apart so that they look more volumized and a little messier.
Step 3: Add your favourite glitzy tiara
Once your hair is tousled just right, add your favourite glitter tiara to the crown of your head, and you're good to go!
3. Gigi Hadid: pinned back waves
Clearly, the pinned back center part is making a comeback in a big way. This look was all over Versace's Spring 2018 show, and who better to pull it off at the Met Gala than supermodel Gigi Hadid? Not only does this hairstyle give off major retr-chic vibes, it's also super easy to create at home. All you need are some cool berets, and if you don't have any handy, two bobby pins will do. The key to this look is to pin your hair back while still maintaining volume around your face so, you guessed it, we're going to be using a few wefts of Luxy Hair extensions for this style! Here's how to get the look:
Step 1: Separate your hair into a center part, and clip your Luxes in
Create a center part in your hair. Then, separate your hair at the temple and clip a 1 clip weft in. Separate a bit of hair below that and clip a 2 clip weft in. Repeat this on both sides. This extra hair will also help the pins hold and prevent them from slipping and sliding.
Step 2: create loose waves
With a larger barrel curling wand, about 1 1/2 inches, start to curl your hair and create loose waves. The trick to creating effortless waves is to start wrap your hair around the curling wand at different heights, as well as to wrap some hair strands facing toward your face, and some strands facing away from your face. This will give your waves a bit of extra volume as well.
Step 3: pin each side back
Grab your favourite beret or bobby pin (Kassinka uses a beautiful rose gold bobby pin), pull your hair back tightly behind your ear, and pin the hair down just above your ear. Repeat on the other side, and that it! Did you know that there's a wrong way and a right away to pin a bobby pin? And that's it!
