The Faces Behind Luxy: Amy, President of Luxy Hair

What does a typical day at Luxy look like for you?

I started with Luxy at the end of August 2021 remotely, which was a first in my career - like many others post-COVID. My day starts with coffee, lighting candles in my office, and a scan of WWD, Business of Fashion, Vogue Business, Glossy... a multitude of publications. I send an inspirational, thought provoking message to the team to reflect upon. From there, no day is the same.

Describe your WFH outfit

It definitely depends upon my mood. I am not an overly formal person, but I love the art of fashion and pulling looks together. These days I have to create more opportunities to do so. Always jewelry - whether or not the balance of my outfit is casual. Usually neutrals. Typically solids. I like to mix monochromatic textures.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in this field?

It sounds cliche, but I have always had an innate interest in and passion for fashion, beauty, art and interiors. All signs pointed me in this direction.

Who is your hair inspo and why?

Wow, that is a hard one! I actually would like to give credit to a colourist that I follow whose expertise is in brown hair -- @yogacolourist. I’ve not had the pleasure of her doing my hair, but I am always looking to her (Sharon) for color inspiration. She is insanely talented.

Favourite thing about working at Luxy?

By far my favourite thing is the people and culture. My team is unbelievable and the culture is the equivalent of a unicorn - especially in this industry. I am grateful everyday for each and every one of them and those at Beauty Industry Group.

Which emojis do you use the most often?

🤦‍♀️ ❤️

What are 3 things you are grateful for and why?

Family, Health, and Prosperity

What’s the best piece of advice you have received?

I don’t know that it’s necessarily the best advice I’ve received, but the one that has stuck with me and that has been a driving factor in my life - “Your life is like a movie, make it one that someone would want to watch.” Those words have pushed me to take risks and not settle for the status quo.

What is your favourite snack?

Also a hard one! Charcuterie, cheese, olives, popcorn. Finger food in general.

Describe your self care routine?

Exercise! It provides such a mental and physical release. Also spending time with my kids and reading.

Share your haircare routine!

I know it’s a self-perpetuating cycle, but I hate feeling oily or dirty so I wash my hair daily (with sulfate free hair products, of course). My natural hair looks like a bad perm, so I let it air dry only on days where I can pull it back or won’t see anyone. Otherwise, I usually have to blow it dry...sometimes curl it, sometimes flat iron. I am loving the Luxy Velcro Rollers as an alternative to all of the heat damage. They work wonders.

What was the first Luxy product that you tried and your experience?

While I was interviewing, the team sent me my first pair of Luxies. Seamless Hair Extensions in Mocha Brown Balayage. I was FLOORED at how realistic and how the color was such a close match to my own hair. I was equally as surprised at the quality and the way everything blended. Those closest to me thought I had just gotten my hair done...they didn’t even know I was wearing hair extensions.

This is something I strive for as a leader for the brand. We want to be an obvious solution for people that comes across as anything but obvious.

What are your go to Luxy products for everyday and for special occasions?

What we are trying to create is a solution for people to wear everyday not just for special occasions. The product line truly lends itself to that. The Seamless collection is my personal favorite. I was also floored by the quality and thoughtful design of our hair accessories and tools. You don’t realize it until they are in your hands. The team uses sustainable, recycled, natural materials to boot. My daughter takes them from me all of the time! I have to go searching around the house to retrieve them!

Which social platform is your favourite and who do you enjoy following the most and why?

Probably instagram at the moment as it is still my go to in terms of finding new brands. A long term go-to has been FIGTNY, and I love Celeste Barber

What was the last book that you read that made a huge impact on your life?

I love to read. I finally read Linchpin when I started with Luxy Hair. I wish every organization would require their employees to read this as well as truly integrate the book’s ideals into their culture. Many THINK they do in theory but in practice are dramatically the opposite.

What is your daily mantra or words to live by?

The energy that you put out comes back to you. And energy is palpable. I am a firm believer in this.

What was the best compliment you have ever received?

That I somehow changed someone’s life for the better. That I made them feel better about themselves. That I taught them something new. That I made them happy.

What’s your biggest pet peeve? And why?

Loud eaters. Period. It makes my skin crawl.

What’s your horoscope sign and how would you describe yourself in 3 words?

I’m on the cusp of Aries and Taurus so I would describe myself as ambitious, optimistic, and indulgent.

If you could only bring 3 items with you on a deserted island what would they be and why?

My 3 kids! If it wasn’t my family and there was no wifi/cell reception, definitely
an exceptionally long book (perhaps one about getting off of a deserted island as quickly as possible), music, and a massive bag of toiletries.

What is your love language?

Can someone be all five? If I had to pick one it would be quality time. Time together, doing things for one another, physical contact. Praise and gifts are less important to me.

What’s the last thing that made you smile/giggle?

My kids….they are all funny in their own way! And funny coworkers. I have a very bad habit of getting slap happy in inappropriate situations. Like a 5 year old getting reprimanded for laughing with their friends in class. Life is too short to be overly serious.
