There’s no better time than January 1st to take a moment to reflect on your current habits and set goals in the areas that have some room for improvement. New Year’s resolutions are a great way to start the year off with a fresh slate and give you a chance to create new habits that will set you on a healthy and productive track for the new year. These changes could be part of your weekly health routine, like how often you go to the gym and how much water you drink, or they could be changes in your self-care habits such as your skin and hair care routines.
Today, we’re going to be talking about all the New Year's resolutions we think you should consider to ensure 2019 is your best hair year yet. Many of these habits are actually quite simple and will help you see positive results and healthier, shinier hair pretty quickly. New year, new hair? We think so! Follow along for 10 of our most achievable New Year’s resolutions to make your hair this year.
1. Indulge in weekly treatments
We’re always told to take the time during the week to indulge in a weekly hair treatment, but sometimes this is much easier said than done! Take the chance this new year to pick back up on this habit and indulge in some new hair treatments, like the Love Hair Nourishing Mask. This deeply hydrating treatment is sure to bring moisture and strength back to your hair and is a soothing, therapeutic experience with ingredients of Lavender, Pracaxi, and Jojoba oils. We suggest using a treatment once a week and letting the treatment sit on your hair for 10 to 15 minutes after shampooing in the shower.
2. Eat foods that help your hair
Having healthy, shiny hair starts from the inside out, and this means focusing on your diet. Since your hair is made of protein, it’s important to focus on protein and iron-rich foods such as eggs, fish, meat, and nuts to build hair strength and growth. Another area to focus your attention on is foods high in vitamins. Carrots, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes are very high in vitamin A, while broccoli, strawberries, and oranges are high in vitamin C. Try to limit your intake of refined sugars and processed foods this new year and instead opt for those rich in vitamins and nutrients.
3. Try a no heat challenge
2019 is the year we make the resolution to try to limit our hair’s exposure to heat! There are so many heatless ways to curl and smooth your hair’s texture, it’s simply a matter of figuring out what works for you. Embracing natural texture and letting your hair breathe is one of the best steps you can take to achieving healthy hair. It’s all about using heat in moderation!
If you’re someone who doesn’t think that quitting heat entirely is possible, we challenge you to start the year off with a no-heat challenge for 7 days. This will at the very least give your hair a chance to have some downtime, and if the results impress you, it could be the beginning of a new regular practice even past the 7 days.
4. Change your hairstyle
If you’re someone who embraces the “new year, new you” mentality when it comes to ringing in the new year, why not also change up your hairstyle to embrace your fresh perspective? In our opinion, there’s no better time to try something new with your hair than the new year! There are so many options and you could do anything from chopping off a few inches, adding bangs or even trying out a new color.
If you’re someone who fears commitment and likes to test out a color before dying your whole head, we suggest using Luxy Hair extensions in an ombre set. This will give you a new balayage, sun-kissed hair color that can simply clip in and out as you please without damaging your hair in the process.
5. Switch to natural products
Do you really know the ingredients in the products that you use in the shower and to style your hair? If not, there’s no better time to re-evaluate than the new year and opt for some new products with natural ingredients, or simply opting for more natural DIY masks. Avocados, honey, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar, among others, are all highly beneficial for the hair and are likely already sitting in your kitchen cabinets.
6. Schedule regular salon appointments
As the year winds down and things get busy, it’s understandable if you got behind on your regular salon appointments and trims. Luckily, 2019 is your year of healthy hair and maintenance so first things first—book yourself a salon appointment. This will give your hair a completely fair chance at a fresh start. We suggest getting a trim and deep conditioning treatment during your appointment.
While it’s great to book that initial appointment and start off the year on a good note, it’s also important to continue regular maintenance and touch-up appointments at the salon regularly throughout the year. We recommend booking a hair appointment every 6-8 weeks to trim off any dry, dull ends and to keep your hair strong and healthy. If you ever end up having haircut regret, have a pair of Luxy Hair extensions on hand to have long, luscious locks on demand after a chop!
7. Learn to style your natural texture
A great challenge and resolution to take upon yourself in 2019 are to try to learn how to work with your natural hair texture. Often we get so used to using blow-dryers, straighteners, and curlers, and sometimes all three in one styling session, that we completely forget how to work with the natural texture we have.
Whether your hair is fine and straight, or coarse and curly, there’s always a way to use enhancing products or smoothing serums to bring out the absolute best in the hair you were blessed with. Another great tip to working with your natural texture is to use Luxy Hair extensions as a workaround to heat styling! Simply style the extensions the way you would your actual hair and clip them in. This way, your saving your actual hair from damage but still getting your desired styled look with the extensions.
8. Wash your hair less often
Many may be surprised to learn that it’s actually much healthier for your hair to shampoo it less often. While it may seem like washing and cleansing your hair is beneficial, if you do this too often it can actually end up stripping the natural oils of your hair and leaving you with dry tresses. In 2019, we suggest re-evaluating how many times you wash your hair per week and limiting this to 1 to 2 times at a maximum.
There are plenty of ways to work with second or third-day hair, whether it be a style or simply opting for dry shampoo. Topknots, sleek low buns and intricate braids are just a few of many options, and sometimes these styles even work better with second or third-day hair since it has a little more grit to hold a style.
9. Switch to a silk pillowcase
If you’re someone who wakes up with bedhead or tangled hair after a good night’s sleep, a great new year’s resolution for you could be to run to the store and purchase a silk pillowcase. Many may not be aware of this, but the typical cotton pillowcase can actually be damaging and drying to the skin and hair. SIlk allows the hair to glide freely throughout the night which in turn, creates less frizz and allows you to wake up with sleek, smooth texture. Silk also builds up fewer bacteria, which can also help with preventing breakouts! It’s a win-win for both your hair and skin.
10. Accept your hair as it is
Lastly, one important resolution to make with yourself and your hair this year is to accept your hair as it is! We constantly criticize ourselves, hair included, in so many ways, so one of our main resolutions for you this year is to see the positives in your hair that you’ve been blessed with. Whether it’s the fact that you love the color of your hair or your natural curls, every style of hair is beautiful in its own way, especially one we learn to embrace and accept it ourselves. Confidence and acceptance of your hair are more important than any product or regime!
We hope you took some inspiration moving into the new year to pick up some new healthy hair habits. Which hair resolutions have you made for 2019? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
