Thin Hair Care Guide

If you weren’t genetically born with super thick hair, you’ll be quite aware that having locks that run on the thinner side has both its pros and cons. On one hand, you have less hair to style, shorter drying times and a naturally silky texture, but on the other hand your hair may struggle to hold a curl and lack volume. Luckily there are a few strategies that you can take to hide thin hair, but ultimately caring for your hair and making diet and lifestyle changes is the best way to learn to fall in love with your thin hair and make the most of what you’ve got! From diet changes to product recommendations and accessories, follow along for everything you need to know about caring for your thin hair.

Diet Changes

Although the texture and thickness of the hair you were born with isn’t something you can control, there are factors affecting your hair that you do have the ability to change, like your diet. The food you eat and the lifestyle you live surprisingly have quite a direct correlation with the appearance of your hair. Thinning hair could be the result of a vitamin deficiency or a lack of certain nutrients. Below are some diet changes you could make that your thin hair will thank you big time for:

1. Add collagen to your diet

Although you can’t technically “thicken” your hair or add to your follicle count, there are definitely ways that you can prevent any further hair loss. Collagen is known for its benefits in helping to keep up a youthful complexion, but its benefits work for hair as well. Collagen improves blood circulation and increases amino acids in your body, which both reduce the risk of thinning hair.

2. Incorporate vitamin B into your diet

B vitamins and biotin supplements are known for their benefits in improving the look and feel of skin, hair and nails. Be sure to include foods in your diet that are high in B vitamins such as spinach, whole grains, yogurt, eggs and flaxseed. If you’re unsure about your B vitamin levels, take a supplement to be sure you’re getting the proper amount each and every day.

3. Add cinnamon to your latte

This may seem random, but cinnamon has been proven to be linked to hair growth. The spice improves circulation, which in turn brings oxygen and nutrients to your hair follicles to prevent hair loss. It’s an easy and yummy ingredient to add to your morning latte, so why not give it a shot? The results could surprise you!

4. Avoid white sugars and carbs

Even if you add all these supplements and new vitamins into your routine, there is still one major change that needs to be done in terms of your diet. White sugars and carbs have been linked to hair loss and should be avoided if you’re hoping to transform your hair. Avoid anything with too much refined ingredients or containing aspartame and try to keep your diet filled with clean, whole foods with natural sugars.

Healthy Hair Habits & Lifestyle Changes

In addition to the food you consume, the lifestyle decisions you make also play a direct role in the appearance and thickness of your hair. Follow along for some of our favourite go-to lifestyle hacks to ensure your fine locks are as thick and voluminous as possible.

1. Stress

Stress is one of the biggest and most surprising culprits behind thinning hair and hair loss. If you find that you get overwhelmed easily and feel stressed often, this could be a major factor contributing to the appearance of your hair. Take time out of your daily routine to incorporate a self-care routine that you know works to calm you down and bring your mind to ease, whether it be a certain type of workout, reading a book or mellowing out with some Netflix. If you don’t have something that works for you yet, one of our favourite ways to unwind and pamper is by using a DIY hair mask. Try a natural mask with includes Pure Coconut Oil and reap double the benefits for your hair!

2. Don't overdo the heat

If you already have relatively thin hair, the last thing you want to do is add damage to your hair! One of the quickest ways to damage your hair is by overusing heat products. Be sure to limit your use of heat products and when you do use them, use a heat protectant product, or a few of our favourite natural heat protectants, to avoid damage and split ends. Better yet, practice creating heatless waves and curls to avoid heat damage altogether.

3. Massage your scalp

A great life hack to promoting hair growth is to take time to give yourself an indulgent scalp massage for a few minutes everyday. This is something you can easily do yourself and promotes growth and thickness by increasing blood flow in the scalp and stimulating the hair follicles.

4. Only use conditioner on the ends of your hair

Often adding a heavy moisturizing product near the roots weighs the hair down and makes it appear even more fine and thin. To avoid this, simply focus the conditioner on the ends of your hair. Over conditioning your roots can also lead to oily hair faster. If this is the case for you, here's a guide on how to get rid of oily hair.

5. Blow dry your hair upside down

Giving your hair a proper blowout is one of the simplest ways to make your hair appear thicker! Use a round brush while blowing drying for extra volume and dry your roots with your hair upside down for extra lift at the crown of the head. Here's a tutorial on how to give yourself a salon worthy blowout at home.

6. Don’t grow your hair too long

One of the most basic hairstyles to avoid if you have thin hair is growing your hair too long. Thin hair typically tapers near the ends quite quickly and having stringy, long hair is the easiest way to make your hair appear even thinner than it is. If you truly want the length, Luxy hair extensions will be the thin hair girl’s best friend. A common concern for girls with thin hair is that the extension clips will show, but we at Luxy have got you covered with a list of tried and true tips to ensure your extensions blend seamlessly.

Products

Aside from diet and lifestyle changes, incorporating certain products that target thin hair into your hair care routine can do wonders. From supplements to texturizers to masks, follow along for some of our favourite products that add volume and life back to fine tresses:

It helps to add natural texture and grit to your hair which is the perfect remedy for locks that struggle to hold a style. Be sure to go light on the texturizing spray though, so that your hair is not weighed down by too much product.

2. Root volume spray
